NZ120 3d Printed Kiwirail AK

Finally turning up in the post this week is the long awaited Kiwirail AK carriage, 3 Prints later!

The window frames will be painted black & clear plastic will be cut to the appropriate length & height then fitted thus completing the look.

The bogies require brass bearings & wheels available from Russell @ trackgangproducts.co.nz

3D Printed K Class, fitted with LED & couplers

Showing off the K class with pipes made from using solder wire, drilling appropriate sized holes (0.7mm) and it turned out quite good I thought. Being solder wire there was no issue bending & creates a battered pipe effect.

The headlight was removed so a LED could be fitted.

New Designs May 2013

Work continues on all fronts, the streamlined KA is currently being printed with the AK print finally being accepted by Shapeways.

On request it was designed off a blueprint provided, it never made it past the drawing board thanks to the new dl class.

 Very much a work in progress, although the basic shape is there.

 After numerous the AK was finally accepted for printing, around $100 in frosted ultra detail makes it a very expensive carriage. 

Streamlined Ka

Streamlined Ka. Designed off the recent K model with the shroud based on when they first entered service.

Following the success of the K class, there was a need for more similar locomotives in the North Island. The new locomotives incorporated a number of improvements, including a re-designed plate frame to eliminate the cracking issues the K class were experiencing; roller bearings on all wheels; hydrostatic lubrication throughout; and the inclusion of the ACFI feedwater heater system as pioneered by K 919. As the ACFI equipment was criticised for its aesthetic appearance, it was obscured with shrouding fitted to both the K^A class and contemporary K^B class.

The Zh with fitted brass bogies from woodsworks. The bodie was printed in "Strong & Flexible" & needs sanding to create a smooth finish.

Showing the underside. It should be noted that the bogies need filing down on the sides to allow it to go around the somewhat tight curves. But apart from that the concept worked out.

The old man suggested moving the driving wheels forward on the Ba to create a talked about S Shunter class, making it perfect for shunting dutys as the entire weight of the boiler is more centered. 

NZR F Class Test Print

Today saw the arrival of the NZR F test print. in NZ120 scale its tiny! the smallest print of all my designs so far.

A quick post showing the current progress of the K test print. It almost fits perfectly, I'm going to have to do a little bit of filing tonight to reduce the height by 1 - 1.2mm.

Further work has been done to install dcc chips into the steamers, it appears you have to have pickup on main drivers & all 8 tender wheels for smooth running.
