Fooling Around with Kiwi Trains: Adventures in 3D Modeling & Printing (1:120 - 1:8 Scale) - N, HO, O, G, 5inch, 7.25inch & 15inch Gauges! No Ads, Just Some Nutty Tales from Peter Bryant @ Portland Railroad, Northland NZ
This long weekend see's the Trackgang's 56' carriage set currently painted in a basic red get an overhaul & general tidy up. And having recently designing the steam heat van I came across many colour pictures of the northerner train which inspired a rather impulsive painting spree.
The stripe appears to be
The DL class is not prototypical...
Still a bit unsure about the stripes, perhaps a bit thicker.. to late now
This weekend the Zp model is being printed, which means the design is solid. whilst pondering I wondered how hard working doors would be. After playing around this is an early test with only 1 side working, the other side remaining permanently closed.
Until a test print arrives & I get to test if the door system works it wont be available. But soon with any luck!
2 tests have been ordered, 1 in Frosted Detail & 1 in Strong & Flexible Polished
Today the NZR Fs Class 50' Heat steam van arrived. Printed in Frosted Ultra Detail. After the usual cleaning up process & some fine primer we are left with the following.
All this effort just to keep the customers warm. Would have been cheaper to issue army blankets to the passengers when it gets cold during them long winter nights!
After more painting & weathering, the 56'er rake is almost ready to roll after 3 couplers are replaced. 2 to install on the Fs class
A video of it running in a consist of 56'ers. Hauled by Jolon's DC 4444 & DJ 3424
The design is rather simple, able to be purchased however in Strong & Flexible through to detail plastics. I've ordered a test print in Strong & Flexible polished, giving enough smoothness & maintaining a lower price.
The NZ120 Silver Fern undergrubbins arrived. Printed in Frosted Ultra Detail. I've done some work on the non powered end. The powered end is not so simple, with the chassis taking up half the space. Some butchering required.
Today from Shapeways the updated NZ120 English Electric DF Shell arrived.
This time some pictures showing my procedure of cleaning up models designed in FUD. It seems to do the trick, although repeated cleaning, scrubbing, drying might be required to completely remove the waxy/oily excess.
Failure to ensure a dry finish leads to issues later on when attempting to mask the model in the painting stages among other things!
The Chassis I used was from an N Scale EF58 Chassis
Rinsing and scrubbing of the body under running water required
Air gun hooked up to an air compressor for removing moisture & buildup
Model sitting in the sun to dry
After a coat of primer & an initial coat of red
Painting of side-frames complete, body in painting stages
One truck sanded down, other remains untouched for comparison sake (N Scale EF58 Chassis)
Painted Sideframes glued on
A light dry brushing later. The right hand trucks looking the part.
All side-frames attached.
After 2 coats of 90% Tamiya Red X-7 & 10% Tamiya Hull Red XF-9. Next step is masking for the roof
After the roof was painted.. Certainly looking closer to the real thing. No paint lifted at all, the cleaning up of the model & nice warm paint certainly makes all the difference!
After a coat of Matt Clear
More weathering later
The other side..
After hand grabs added & round window rims painted silver.
